My Ending to "The Necklace" By Guy de Maupassant

“I—I—I have not Mme. Forester’s diamond necklace!”

He jumped up, frightened—
“What? How? It is not possible!”

“If it had not been so, I wouldn’t have told you.”
Leaving the house, slamming the door behind him, M. Loisel said,”Someone lends you their most prized possession and you lose it... You lose it, you find it!”

Mme. Loisel searched the house up and down, finding the necklace nowhere. She wanted to search outside of the front door, but was shocked to find that the latch had been broken. The effect of the slam of the door must have caused it she thought. Mme. Loisel was locked inside of her home. She of little knowledge didn’t know her husband had planned to go to his brother’s to relieve some stress and wouldn’t return for a few days.

“Dave, I can’t believe her. Does she think I can afford to pay for a necklace, when we’re barely surviving ourselves?”

“Well, I have the money for you to replace the necklace if you want it. I’d do anything for a brother and a sister in law in need.”

Dave gave M. Loisel the money, and thanking him, off he went to purchase a replica of the lost necklace. An hour or so later, he returned to Dave’s house.

“I returned the necklace back to Mme. Forrester, but I didn’t tell my wife. She has no idea what I’m up to. I’m going to leave her searching for the necklace. Maybe this would teach her to be more responsible and to take care of other’s belongings. It’s going to be so hilarious when she finds out I’ve already purchased a new one. HI-LAR-I-OUS, I tell you.”

At home Mme. Loisel banged on the door, wishing someone could hear her weak cry. Becoming tired, she fell to the floor. The house was so quiet she could hear her own heartbeat. “Where is my husband? Why did he leave me to this situation alone? He’s never left me alone before. Why now?"

Slowly recuperating, she found her way on her feet. She dragged along into the kitchen, preparing to get a bite to eat. The refrigerator was EMPTY. Since they’d gone to the party, they’d forgotten about their grocery trip they were to make. Her stomach began to rumble at the thought of having no food. Everything had gone from bad to worse.

A couple days had gone by, and Dave and M.Loisel were in the middle of a Steelers football game. The Colts were winning by one but if the Steelers made another touchdown, they would win. There were twenty seconds left in the game and James Harrison was already at the 30-yard line.
"Go, baby,Go!" Dave and M.Loisel became very excited....."TOUCHDOWN!!!" The Steelers had won the game. By then, M.Loisel felt it was time to return home.

Upon reaching for the door handle, he heard his wife crying. So he twisted the knob until the door opened. She must've heard him, because she was standing behind the door when he entered. Before he could even tell her the truth about the necklace, she'd landed an iron skillet on the top of his head. And to his feet he would never return.
